- Resorts World Catskills has announced the opening of what is reportedly the largest poker room of any of the State of New York’s commercial casinos. The 5,000 square foot poker room opened on Tuesday at 10am at the Monticello integrated casino resort destination. Conveniently located on the second floor of the Empire Resorts, Inc.

Resorts World Catskills Casino overview
Resorts World Catskills Casino is a $1.2 billion commercial casino and resort which officially opened Feb. 8, 2018 in Monticello, New York.
New York voters supported a constitutional amendment authorizing the issuance of the state’s first commercial gaming licenses in 2013. Later that year, licenses were granted to three different projects. This included del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo and Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady. Both of these properties opened in February 2017.
Additionally, it included the Resorts World Catskills Casino in the Catskill Mountains. Plus, a fourth commercial casino license was awarded later in 2014, allowing Tioga Downs Racino in Nichols, NY to become a full-service commercial casino property. The new Tioga Downs Casino opened in December 2016.
Owner Empire Resorts, Inc. originallycalled the Resorts World Catskills project Montreign Resort Casino. The original opening date was in the spring of 2018 as well. Empire entered into a license agreement to rebrand the resort casino as a Resorts World property in May 2017.
The property is just a ten-minute drive from the Monticello Gaming and Raceway, a harness racing and racino property. Empire Resorts owns both properties. Empire Resorts claims it will continue to operate the Monticello Gaming and Raceway.
Monticello is in the southern part of Upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains, close to New York State Route 17.
High hopes for the casino resort include turning around the once-prosperous but recently depressed Catskills tourism industry. However, fears are the New York state casino market is quickly becoming saturated. Plus, Resorts World Catskills may have difficulty attracting a large customer base from New York City. After all, neighboring states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut developed a booming casino industry as well.

The poker room, which features 19 tables, opened in early March 2018.
More food and beverage plans include Cellaio, an Italian steakhouse restaurant from celebrity chef Scott Conant. Additionally, there is The Doubletop Bar and Grill, Empire Lounge, and Bar 360.
An indoor water park and a Rees Jones-designed 18-hole golf course will open in 2019.

Online casino games at Resorts World Catskills?
Resorts World Catskills owners Empire Resorts appear to have little or no experience in the online gaming industry. However, the organization has long sought out additional revenue streams. In fact, the process for approval to build Resorts World Catskills is evidence of that.
New York legislators were not considering legal and regulated online casino operations in New York in the first quarter of 2018. However, if that changes in the future, Resorts World Catskills might see the opportunity for additional revenue and jump all over it.

Two bills which would legalize and regulateonline pokerin the state of New York were introduced into the New York Senate and Assembly in the first quarter of 2017, then carried over into 2018 after not passing. In fact, New York politicians have claimed all of New York’s licensed casino and Racino properties are behind the idea.
This would presumably include the Resorts World Catskills and its owners, Empire Resorts. With the more than $1 billion cost of the development looming over it, the Resorts World Catskills is sure to be looking for all the additional revenue streams it can get hold of.
